TW: Sexual Assault
NASA (Noise Against Sexual Assault) show is a safe and welcoming gathering place for assault survivors to celebrate the outsider and underground sounds that inspire us to imagine new paradigms outside of a patriarchal society.
Similar shows will be taking place in the US.
Join us for a night of noise, dark electronic, and doom rock in support of sexual assault survivors and in solidarity with Larkin Grimm, who in early 2016 wrote a post detailing a sexual assault against her by Michael Gira of Swans. Gira admitted via his publicist to Pitchfork that the assault took place but refused to call it rape, terming it “an awkward mistake.” After attempting to discuss Gira’s actions with him, Grimm lost her place on Gira’s label, Young God Records. Grimm wrote: “Sending my love to # Kesha I know how you feel. At least I got out of my record deal, though I was never offered another one after that.” Gira cancelled his Australian tour after protests with no official reason given, yet plans to tour in North America this summer and fall.
We are disappointed at Gira’s replication of mainstream abusive power dynamics and his deflection of responsibility for his actions. Many of us would have gone to see Swans on July 10th at the Danforth had Gira not behaved in this way.
This show is a safe and welcoming gathering place for assault survivors to celebrate the outsider and underground sounds that inspire us to imagine new paradigms outside of a patriarchal society. Many of us would have gone to see Swans on July 10th at the Danforth had we not become aware of of Gira's actions.
These problems are not limited to Gira’s actions, nor do they originate with him. His is merely a representative case of the abuses that can and do occur in the field of arts & culture. It is important to remember that these abuses, and those who commit them, are products of, exist within, and replicate our broader culture. We believe it is within the realm of possibility for art & music to make us consider and question the nature of the power that we wield, and which operates in us – in short, to function as a site of counter-cultural production.
In October 2015 Double Double Land was home to an assault. Toronto’s DIY venues are themselves host to acts of violence, both physical and emotional. NASA (noise against sexual assault) is organizing in order to create a safer and more inclusive space within the Toronto’s DIY music scenes. It is hoped that this show will lead to engagement with other venues to work towards a coalition of spaces that are willing to operate by an agreed-upon standard of values and actions to provide a safer environment for all who attend events in them.

Nidus is a perpetually engendered origin revealed by morphing vibrational geometries - a sonic accumulation drifitng on the amorphous continuum that binds the oneiric and political, the autonomous and the integrated, genesis and terminus.

In our piece "Invisible Parallel", we will travel through the city carrying audio transmission devices for live streaming. From the perspective of the audience, both sources of transient urban soundscapes combine into a single electro-acoustic piece in the absence of the performers who are unaware of the other’s contribution to the collaboration.
Patience is rewarded with Patience. A durational listening experience where one song is rendered rarely-recognizable through digital plunderphonics techniques and is the sole audio material used to occupy a space for the whole of an extended duration.
