Decoder: Music Lab
In its second year, Decoder: Music Lab is a free workshop that nurtures and deepens the personal creative processes of fifteen young musicians ages 14-18, The Lab will take place at the Canadian Music Centre from July 25th – 30th 2016. Decoder 2016 will be facilitated by Canadian composer/music educator Jason Doell and will include mentorship from guest artists: pianist Stephanie Chua, composer Anna Hostman, percussionist Nathan Pettipas, and violinist Ilana Walniuk.
As a group, we will meet daily with our instruments to explore alternative ways to engage with the creative process and build tools for creating new music. While in the workshop, we will listen to, perform, and discuss music written by living Canadian composers who work outside/alongside of conventional practices; we will collaborate on creative tasks/exercises; and we will create and perform new works. The workshop will culminate with a public performance at the Canadian Music Centre on Saturday July 30th.
